Andrew Needhammer

Andrew Needhammer ARAD, RAD RTS

Andrew Needhammer began his ballet studies with Janet Mitchell and Edward Verso in Oakland, New Jersey then studied with Richard Thomas, Barbara Fallis and Daniel Levans at the New York School of Ballet. He joined American Ballet Theatre II and toured the U.S., Canada, Korea and Japan before becoming a member of the National Ballet of Canada where he performed in many of the great classic and contemporary ballets including leading roles in Nureyev’s Sleeping Beauty, Balanchine’s Symphony in C and Ashton’s The Dream. He joined Ballet Arizona and danced principal roles in The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Agnes DeMille’s Rodeo and Balanchine’s Serenade and The Four Temperments. Mr. Needhammer is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance and a Registered Teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance. He has students who have participated in summer intensives in the U.S. and London, England, are dance majors at universities around the United States and attending pre-professional programs with companies nationwide. Six of his students have been semi-finalists in the Genee International Ballet Competition in London, Toronto, Glasgow and Wellington, New Zealand. He currently directs the Dance Division of the Northern Arizona University Community Music and Dance Academy.

Karyn started her dance career in Creative Dance at The Dancespace at the age of four!

She has pursued her passion for dance ever since. Over the next 10 years, she completed all her Royal Academy of Dance graded examinations, She went on to complete her Pre- and Professional Vocational levels,. In 2015, she completed her Advanced 1 examination while attending the Royal Academy of Dance Summer Program in Long Beach, California. She completed the Advanced 2 examination at Northern Arizona University in 2016. Karyn was a soloist at the first ever Royal Academy of Dance Challenge USA in San Jose, California in January 2016.

Karyn has passed her love of dance on to others as an assistant teacher to beginning students at the Dancespace and has choreographed pieces featured in the Dancespace’s Dances in the Desert. She danced many starring roles in the Dancespace’s annual Nutcracker (Sugar Plum Fairy), and spring ballets - Sleeping Beauty (Lilac Fairy), and (Cinderella) in our Cinderella Ballet.

Karyn has continued to explore her interest of dance by taking tap and modern dance classes while studying biology at Southern Utah University, where she is embarking upon her junior year.

Jasmine Ercilia Nycole Castro

Jasmine has been dancing at the Dancespace since she was able to stand (literally). Most of her childhood was spent in the studio, choreographing her very special dances for Grandma and Grandpa, As she matured, so did her choreography. She has been producing outstanding dances for her jazz classes and for the two companies, In Spiritus I and II. Her innovative works have been showcased in all of our concerts since 2014. She is also a talented dancer and teacher. She has been teaching Contemporary Jazz at our studio for the past three years.

Jasmine started with In Spiritus II in her 6th grade year of middle school, and was accepted into In Spiritus I during Summer Intensive auditions in 2011. Jasmine honed her ballet technique on the Royal Academy of Dance syllabus and examinations. She completed her Higher Grade 7 and Intermediate Foundation Vocational Examinations before moving to Tucson. She has danced many leading roles in our annual ballets – from Clara and Snow Queen in Nutcracker to Swanilda. In Coppelia.

We are happy and proud to have her back as guest artist for her third year of Summer Intensive at Lake Powell.

 

Summer Kocjan-Castro

Summer is an experienced dancer of 30 years, specializing in Contemporary Dance. Summer has participated in the High School Symposium for Dance Majors at Arizona State University, has studied with Maureen Price, A.R.A.D., and Gail Reed, Ph.D., R.A.D.T.D. at Northern Arizona State University Preparatory School of Dance for two summers. She began teaching Creative Dance classes at The Dancespace in June of 1997, where she taught children ages 3 to 6 for 20 years. Her performance experience includes many Dancespace productions and The Jazz Symposium at University of Arizona. Summer holds a degree in Bachelor of Science in Social Science with a double major in Special Education and English, and a minor in dance. It is a pleasure to welcome “Miss Summer” as guest teacher for the young children she so enjoys working with.

 

Housing is available with local families ($100 per week) or a local motel at discounted rates.
